Villa Honk

Villa Honk is a municipal monument located on Van Beverninghlaan and in the Van Bergen IJzendoornpark in Gouda.

The commission for the construction of Villa Honk was given by the former resident of Palembang, I.A. Rijn van Alkemade. He purchased the land in the Van Bergen IJzendoornpark from the municipality of Gouda in 1910. The villa was probably designed by the architect W. Kromhout. He designed the villa in the so-called Um 1800 style. The architect incorporated various elements into his design that recalled the colonial past of his client. For example, the dome on the roof was shaped like a tropical helmet. The veranda with the pillars at the front also served as a reminder of the client's colonial past. At the time of construction, there was a clear sightline from the front towards the Nieuwe Park. After the construction of Huize Elisabeth in 1919, this view was no longer possible. The laughing lions at the entrance of Huize Elisabeth are said to symbolize the schadenfreude over this lost view.
