The MH17 National Monument is a memorial forest with a memorial located in the Park Vijfhuizen, near Vijfhuizen in memory of the MH17 air disaster in 2014.The whole consists of 298 trees in the shape of a ribbon, linked to the victims. In front of each tree is a plaque with a number, the name, age and nationality of a victim. An amphitheatre and a memorial will be built in the 'eye'. The memorial features the names of the victims in the shape of a spiral. The ribbon of trees was designed by landscape architect Robbert de Koning. The construction of the monument started on 7 December 2016. In March 2017, trees were planted by relatives, Minister Bert Koenders and the CEO of Malaysia Airlines. The official unveiling of the monument took place on 17 July 2017, exactly three years after the disaster.
