The Surinameplein in Amsterdam-West connects the Hoofdweg with the Cornelis Lelylaan and is linked to the Overtoom and Amstelveenseweg via the Surinamestraat.
The square was named in 1922 after the Dutch colony of Suriname, which has been independent since 1975, located on the north coast of South America. The streets in the neighborhood north of the square are also named after geographical concepts in Suriname and the Dutch Antilles. Therefore, the municipality named this area the West Indian neighborhood, but nowadays this area is known as Postjesbuurt.
