The University Library Utrecht is the library for scientific information provision at Utrecht University. The library has a location both in the city center of Utrecht and at Uithof, with smaller libraries at the faculties. The collection of the University Library consists of around 40 collections to support the seven faculties at Utrecht University. Among them are also the Special Collections with manuscripts, books from before 1901, rare or valuable books and maps.
Utrecht University was founded in 1636. However, the City Library Utrecht, also the university library, was started as early as 1584. This library was located in the choir of the Janskerk at Janskerkhof. At the end of 1640, Cornelis Booth was appointed as the first librarian of the University Library.
