Quarantine station Heijplaat - also known as Quarantine area Heijplaat - was a facility for sailors with contagious diseases on the southern bank of the Nieuwe Maas, directly to the west of Heijplaat. To the southwest lies the Work Harbor and to the east the Heijsehaven. The quarantine facility was completed in 1934, but due to the discovery of penicillin, it was never used for sailors. Instead, it was used for the quarantine of emigrants from Eastern Europe, for their crossing to America.
