In the 70s of the last century, nature and environmental groups from Gouda and the surrounding area expressed the wish to establish a heme garden. In 1973, an initiative of the Gouda Environment Working Group drew up a first plan for a garden. After that, an area was sought where, on a small area, the plant species characteristic of the peat meadows could be made accessible to a wide audience. That was found in the recreation area de Goudse Hout.
In 1984 the Foundation and a working group Heemtuin Goudse Hout were established. The Foundation pooled the knowledge available in the Gouda region in the field of development and management of nature areas. Knowledge about nature and environmental education was also widely available. The Province, the Recreation Board and the Foundation participated in the working group. The working group was given the task of drawing up a layout plan for a heme garden. That plan was completed in 1986. In 1987, the central part of the garden was transferred to the Stichting Heemtuin Goudse Hout. The second phase of the garden, the outdoor area with the hayfield, the pilot whales and the water features, was completed in 1990.
