Fort Berchem or Redoute van Berchem is part of the State-Spanish Lines that is located in Terhofstede near Retranchement.
The fort is the remains of a redoute that was built as Fort Terhofstede in 1584 by the Spaniards on a marsh on the Zwin. The storm surge of September 25, 1597 largely destroyed this fort. Eventually, the Spaniards left the fort around 1603 and moved to the Sint-Jansfort near Cadzand. Only a few were left behind.
