Grist mill hole

The Korenmolengat is a small nature reserve that is located along the Rotte north of the Dutch city of Rotterdam. It consists of trouser forest, peat bog and three open puddles. The area developed from a peat lake, which arose after wet dyeing in the 16th century. In the 18th century, the area remained outside the reclamation of the adjacent Tweemanspolder because it remained within the bosom of the Rotte and was separated from the polder by a dike. As a result, the Korenmolengat has never been deveined or dewatered. It has its own water level of NAP -1.90m, while the level in the Tweemanspolder can be lowered to -6.00m.

Due to the much lower level in the Tweemanspolder, there is a sideways, i.e. a downward flow of water through a poorly permeable layer to the polder. Originally, water from the Rotte was let in by means of a float tank to maintain the water level, while in periods of precipitation surplus the surplus was drained to the Tweemanspolder via an overflow. In 1996, the Schieland Water Board and the Rottermeren Recreation Board installed a helophyte filter, which improved the water quality in the Korenmolengat. The helophyte filter has a surface area of approximately 0.8 ha and is of the flow field type.
