The Struikwaard is a floodplain area of 38 hectares on the Afgedamde Maas north of the village of Giessen. It is owned by the Stichting Brabants Landschap. Another 12 hectares is managed as a nature reserve by the nature association Altenatuur and is owned by the Waterschap Rivierenland.
Until recently, the area consisted of very intensively used fields and meadows. Another part was excavated starting in 1995 for dike construction. In this area, hardwood and softwood floodplain forests are now developing. Since 2001, a beaver has inhabited the area. The area is also grazed by several Fjord horses. Sand martins also breed here. There are two ponds, and there is a rich dragonfly fauna: small red-eyed damselfly, four-spotted chaser, and firetail. In 2006, the southern emerald dragonfly was observed.
