This is the Liberation Monument in Noordwijk, also known as the Tappenbeck monument.
Oswald Wenckebach created a natural stone pillar topped by a bird (seagull) with spread wings, symbolizing peace and freedom. The wings of the bird represent the V for Victory. The pillar stands on a base, which reads:
In memory of Rudolf Tappenbeck who fell for truth and justice at Neuengamme December MCMXLIV.
The square base is equipped with a mirror (symbol of knowledge), scales, and a sword (symbol of justice). A radio lamp and microphone reflect the many contributions of Rudolf Tappenbeck in the field of amateur radio broadcasting.
Rudolf Tappenbeck (1898-1944) was a hotelier and involved in the resistance in Noordwijk. The monument was established by the Tappenbeck Monument Committee and has been transferred in ownership to the municipality of Noordwijk. The monument was unveiled on September 25, 1948, by his son Peter Tappenbeck.
