At the Traffic Post Tiel of Rijkswaterstaat, the staff directs shipping traffic 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Around 165,000 ships pass by Tiel each year. This involves traffic from Germany to Amsterdam and Rotterdam and, of course, vice-versa. Especially during the day, it is extremely busy, which is why a team of three is needed at the post. During the night hours, Rijkswaterstaat can manage with a crew of two people. The staff monitors shipping traffic in several ways: via radar, with the help of automated systems, and – simply the traditional way – with a strong binocular.
The ships that pass by should have reported their arrival in advance. Therefore, it is known at all times which ships are approaching and what their cargo is. In many cases, these relate to hazardous substances, such as chemicals, gasoline, and liquefied gas.
It is important to know which substances are being transported in case of a fire outbreak. In such a case, the traffic post can provide the fire department with adequate information, thereby minimizing risks to the firefighters and the surrounding area.
