The Hunenborg is a ring rampart along the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal near Volthe in the municipality of Dinkelland in Overijssel. The whole consists of the wooded remains of a main castle and an outer castle that is hardly visible anymore.
After the land of the Hunenborg was donated to the Twente Oudheidkamer Association, which was founded in 1906, research was carried out from 19 June to 8 July 1916 under the supervision of the archaeologist Jan Hendrik Holwerda in the form of excavations. These mainly took place in the part of the site called the great or high burg. In addition to the large burg, there is also a small or low burg on the Hunenborg.
The 5-hectare area has been managed by Landschap Overijssel since 1968. The vegetation, including heavy trees, may be removed to prevent further damage to the archaeological soil archive.
In 2016, the site was again archaeologically investigated. This yielded information that led to a date of around 1050. This dating means that there are three possible commissioners for the construction of the fortification: the King of the Holy Roman Empire, the Count of Twente and the Bishop of Utrecht. The latter seems to be the most likely candidate.
