Weerdesteyn

Weerdesteyn is a castle and knight's court town near Langbroek, in the municipality of Wijk bij Duurstede in the province of Utrecht. Little is known about the early construction history of Weerdesteyn. The size of the bricks and the masonry suggest a dating around 1300. In 1538, the house was recognized as a knight's court town. At that time, it had a moat, a drawbridge, and a gatehouse.

The cadastral map from 1820 shows that the castle was separately moated. On the outer bailey, which was also moated, there was a farm with outbuildings. The entire combination of tower and outer bailey was also moated, making the whole complex surrounded by two, partly even three moats. In 1870-71, the residential tower was restored. A commemorative stone was placed, according to which the residential tower was destroyed once in the 16th century. A few years later, a renovation was carried out in neo-Gothic style. The base of the tower was surrounded by a structure with a small hall and two guest rooms. In 1875, a wall was built around the island, the farm on the outer bailey was demolished, and a new farm was built outside the moat.

The castle is owned by the twin brothers Joan and Roelof de Wijkerslooth de Weerdesteyn.
