The first mention of Moersbergen dates back to 1435 when the Utrecht Cathedral Chapter lent Mr Steven van Sleen with 'de timmeringhe Maersbergen'. Steven van Sleen was probably the builder of Moersbergen Castle. From the 16th century the castle was rebuilt a number of times. The Utrecht architect Samuel Adrianus van Lunteren rebuilt the castle in the style of the time. The tilted wall with center gate was demolished. The windows were also changed and dormers were added. [1]
Around 1860, major renovations were carried out by the then owner, Baron Vincent Matthias d'Ablaing van Giessenburg. This time in the then popular neo-Gothic style. [1] The outer walls of the castle were plastered. Between the pigeon tower and the main building, a connecting wall with gate, adorned with decorative battlements, was built.
In 1927, owner Mr. Jan Anton Willem Luden decided to have the castle extensively restored. The appearance of Moersbergen had to be brought back to the style it had in the 18th century: the Dutch Renaissance. A survey of the castle was carried out by Mr. H.J. Meierink from Doorn and then architect J.W.H. Berden made a restoration design. Architect Berden also designed the restoration of muiderslot. Moersbergen Castle was again provided with cross windows and the bell tower was lowered. On the east side of the castle, an extension was demolished and the plaster layer of the facades was also removed.
