The eastern part of the Leersumse Veld - second and third lake - is closed during the breeding season from mid-March to the end of August.
The natural depression was formed in the penultimate ice age by melting ice in somewhat warmer periods. In wet places, peat has arisen over centuries. About 6000 years ago people settled here. Due to deforestation and overgrazing, the Leersumse Veld became an area of drifting sand and heathland. Two centuries ago, the peat was excavated for peat. This created the Leersumse Plassen. The higher moors have been planted with Scots pines, larch and Douglas firs from about 1900. At the time when the area was privately owned, stately oak-linden avenues were laid out. In 1911, the 80-hectare Leersumse Veld was purchased by M.C. Verloop. From the first lake he had a swimming pool with an island made and canals were also dug for canoeing. In recent decades, the groundwater level has been significantly lowered, which is clearly visible on the banks. The heath that blooms in August is grazed by a herd of cows to prevent grazing and denseness of the heath. In every season this nature reserve offers something special, but in winter you can skate on the second and third lake.
