The Biezenloop

The Biezenloop is a stream in the North Brabant municipality of Meierijstad. The Biezenloop is a tributary of the river Aa.

The Biezenloop originates at the former municipal boundary between Veghel and Sint-Oedenrode and then flows northwest along the industrial estate De Dubbelen. The stream then flows as a watercourse parallel to the Zuid-Willemsvaart in a northwestern direction, passing through and along the Wijboschbroek, to bend northward near Heeswijk, to be channeled through a culvert under the Zuid-Willemsvaart and empty into the Aa.

The Biezenloop is a narrow stream that has been diverted several times in the past. Originally, the stream branched off at the hamlet of Zondveld near Veghel. One branch joined with the Jekschotse Loop and continued through the hamlets of Hoge and Lage Biezen. The other branch met in Rijbroek with the Leinsmortels Streamlet. The two stream branches converged at Doornhoek and emptied into the Aa.

The Biezenloop plays an important role in the water management of the southern part of the Veghel municipality. When the Zuid-Willemsvaart was constructed, the connection with the Aa was redirected towards the Grote Loop across the area of De Dubbelen.

With the development of the industrial estate and the A50 motorway, the Biezenloop has been designated as an ecological connectivity zone. This has been accomplished by making the banks less steep and thus more accessible. The aim is to restore the stream as a suitable habitat for water birds and species such as the common toad and the viviparous lizard.
