The Upper Forest is located at a high altitude, at about 200 to 240 meters above sea level. The Lower Forest is a bit lower, both south of Epen. Eli Heimans, founder of Natuurmonumenten,
called the Upper Forest 'the most beautiful corner of the Netherlands'. A 25-metre-high marl wall, a remnant of an old marl quarry, is called the Chalk Cliff of Heimans.
In the Upper Forest, the Ardennes seem to begin. Pine trees, wild boars and hilly views give you that ultimate foreign feeling. You are therefore on the
southernmost edge of the Netherlands.
