The first phase of the construction took place in 1749, when the old wooden lock in the harbor was demolished. A stone version was now built that could let in water for the purpose of inundation, but remained primarily intended for discharging water. From a military point of view, it was hardly necessary to provide the Bunschoterkom with extra water, but during spring tide, the water from the Zuiderzee could even reach the lowlands below Amersfoort.
