The Holy Catherine Church in Buchten has already had two predecessors. A rare bell adorns the church tower.
The Limburg church village Buchten first appears in tradition around the year 700, as 'Bettinum' or 'Bittenum'.
The church building that served the village for a long time dated back to the thirteenth century and was built in Romanesque style. By the end of the eighteenth century, the church had deteriorated so much that it was due for replacement.
In various phases, a new church was constructed between 1833 and 1837 based on the design by architect Beugels from the nearby Oirsbeek.
One of the towers of the original church was preserved, and a new brick church was built around it, in neoclassical style.
That church eventually became too small, and a new one was built between 1961 and 1963, designed by architect Frits Peutz. When you stand in front of the church and look up, you can see the rare medieval church bell on the Holy Catherine Church, which has a so-called pointed hat model.
Bells with this model are very rare; they were already cast in the surrounding area in the eighth century, and this one probably dates from the twelfth or thirteenth century.
