It is a miracle that during the blowing up of the castle of Valkenburg, the Berkelpoort and the Grendelpoort were spared. The Berkelpoort was built around 1335 and was part of the medieval city defenses.
At that time, the gate also had a drawbridge over the city moat. The Berkelpoort was mainly used by travelers heading towards Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul, and Aachen. In 2007-2008, the gate was thoroughly renovated.
The two large marl towers that make up the gate are now connected by a wooden walkway.
