In this area, there are several burial mounds. These monuments from prehistory are receiving more and more appreciation and attention. All discovered burial mounds are national monuments and are therefore protected. The Veluwe is truly a top area for archaeologists in the Netherlands, which has relatively been little explored. Based on what the archaeologists find in these burial mounds, they try to uncover how the people of Veluwe lived about five thousand years ago, as there is not much other material to find that out.
The burial mounds are the pyramids of Veluwe. The Northwest Veluwe has hundreds of these smaller and larger bumps that either rise above the landscape or are hidden in the forest. There are already forty burial mounds on the Ermelosche Heide alone.
The mounds were used as burial sites over four thousand years ago. Most treasures were already looted from the mounds in the 18th century, but the mounds still contain a wealth of information. Every shard of pottery can provide a clue about the lifestyle and customs of the Veluwe population from that time.
