St. Aloysius Church

The Sint-Aloysiuskerk is a Roman Catholic church building in the Dutch city of Utrecht, in the neighborhood/sub-district Abstede in the district Oost. The church is dedicated to Saint Aloysius.

From around 1600 to 1715, a clandestine church was established in a barn on the Abstederdijk under the name "Statie onder het Kruis". In 1715, the station moved to the Oudegracht and became the predecessor of the Martinuskerk. With the official establishment of the Martinus parish in 1856, Abstede also fell under it. At that time, mainly gardeners and horticulturists lived there. Due to population growth and urban expansion, there arose a need for a parish of its own for Abstede. In the period from 1904 to 1907, the Jesuits prepared for this. During this time, they had a church built at Abstederdijk 301, opposite the farm where the clandestine church had been two centuries earlier. In 1907, the Aloysius parish was officially established and split off from the Martinus parish.
Due to large-scale urban expansions in the 1920s, the church quickly became too small. When the new church was taken into use in 1924, the old church became a community center under the name Aloysiushuis. After 1975, this building was demolished.
