Beemsterstraat

The Beemsterstraat is a street in Amsterdam-Noord. It received its name by council decision on November 4, 1925; thereafter, the extension of the street was also designated as Beemsterstraat on October 30, 1963. It is named after the Beemster polder.

The street runs as a kind of radial road in Amsterdam-Noord. It starts at the Nieuwendammerdijk in the garden village of Nieuwendam, where several streets are named after places and polders in North Holland. It then runs through the aforementioned garden village with small houses from 1925 and crosses the Purmerweg. It crosses a ring canal at the Watergangseweg. After that, it runs in the Waterlandplein neighborhood, where it crosses the IJdoornlaan. There, the buildings sometimes resemble those in a garden village, but there are also high-rise apartments to be seen. The buildings there are of considerably more recent date. The Beemsterstraat continues further north through this neighborhood until it passes under Rijksweg 10 via the Beemsterstraatbrug; it has no direct connection with the highway. From then on, there is no more urban development; it continues for about 500 meters through Waterland until bridge 373. It then transitions into the Meerdijk. In the part that lies in the Waterlandplein neighborhood, the Beemsterstraat has several branches with the same name.
