Bunker complex Overvoorde

The Bunker Complex Overvoorde in Rijswijk is a number of bunkers built by the Germans in 1940 during World War II as a so-called Funkhorchstelle for the benefit of the Luftwaffe.

Shortly after the occupation of the Netherlands by the German Empire, the Haagse estate Overvoorde in Rijswijk was established as a Stützpunkt with the eventual construction of about 35 bunkers. The mansion was requisitioned for use as officers' quarters. The reason for the construction on this estate was the presence of an international telephone line junction that had been laid out by the German Siemens for the PTT in the 1930s, its favorable location in relation to England, and its then very remote position in the estate zone. Most German bunkers were built according to standard layouts, which were categorized by type. There are still about six Küver 413 bunkers. The type 413 at Overvoorde deviates from the standard type 413 and is therefore referred to as 413a. The accommodation in this "uver" housed nine personnel. This type is unique in the Netherlands. The largest bunker in Overvoorde is also a unique building that deviates from the standard norms, with walls and a roof of reinforced concrete that are 2.5 meters thick and dimensions of 39 x 12 meters. The bunker was an SK-bunker, set up for eavesdropping on radio, telephone, and telegraph signals and as a communication post. There were five large antennas that functioned together as a direction finder from 1940 to 1943. Particularly the Allied message traffic to and from England was intercepted and later in the war used to send German fighter planes from airfield Deelen into the air to intercept Allied bombers. In 1944, the Luftwaffe evacuated the complex and left the location.
