The bosom used to be one of the most important links in the history of water management. It is the former drainage bosom of the Stolwijk polder from where the excess water was discharged into the Hollandse IJssel by means of originally mills and later pumping stations at Gouderak. The adjacent nature reserve (left) is also called De Stolwijkse Boezem and consists of island series, water, swamp forest and wet sparse grassland. On the right is an old lock with weir.
