St. Lawrence Church

After the Roman Catholic faith was allowed to be professed again, a euphoric construction of Roman Catholic churches took place. Within thirty years, three large Catholic churches were built in each other's vicinity: the St Laurentius church in Stompwijk, the St Martinus church in Voorburg and the St. Peter and Paul Church in Leidschendam.
All 3 designed by architect E.J. (Evert) Margry (1841-1891).
St. Lawrence Church, consecrated in 1873, was designed as a three-aisled cruciform basilica. This has a floor plan in the form of a cross, a (raised) nave and two aisles. Across it is the transept. These arms of the church are called the transepts.
Margry designed not only the exterior of the church but also the interior. A Gesamtkunstwerk! Much of the neo-Gothic interior in this church is well preserved such as the paintings of the wooden barrel vault, the baptistery with its marble baptismal font, the tiled floor in the nave and aisles, the wooden pews and the three confessionals. Also in the choir you can still see some remains of the 19th century murals.
The church is a national monument and is described as a good example of a neo-Gothic church from Margry's oeuvre and a church with a cultural-historical value because of its image in the village center of Stompwijk.
