The Kromme Aar is part of the Urban Ecological Main Structure, which connects nature areas. Along the Kromme Aar, various types of landscapes are present that are characteristic of the surroundings: alder swamp forest, reed land, and grassland. The Kromme Aar is a particularly bird-rich area, with around fifty species of birds breeding, and there is a stork village along the river. Between the Zegerplas and the Oude Rijn, the Kromme Aar has been 'canalized'.
Around the year 1000 AD, this area still consisted of swamps, with a base of clay and peat. The peat river (Kromme) Aar drained water into the Oude Rijn. In the later Middle Ages, ships carrying turf from Aarlanderveen passed through. Turf is dried peat that was used as fuel. The swamp was drained through pumping, resulting in the polder landscape as we know it today.
