The Easter Hill

The Paasheuvel forms the centerpiece of the star forest that was created here, on the Remmerstein estate, in the eighteenth century. At that time, the ridge mostly consisted of heath and sand. The view from the Paasheuvel, 53 meters above sea level, must have been magnificent. From the center, the star forest was given twelve avenues, which functioned as sightlines for hunting but also provided direction to the view. To the east, the sightline was directed towards the now-vanished castle tower of Remmerstein, the location where a pigeon tower now stands. Other sightlines focused on the church towers of Veenendaal, Rhenen, and Wageningen. Like the view, eight of the twelve avenues and the tea pavilion that stood on the hill have also disappeared over time.
