Birdwatching hide Oelemars (P0152)

This birdwatching hut is owned by the municipality of Losser and is managed by the local birdwatching group. Slough fields have been created in front of the hut, where you can see, for example, gulls and waders.

Just outside Losser, near the German border, lies the nature reserve Oelemars. Once it was a raised bog heather area, which gradually has been cultivated for agriculture and later for large-scale sand extraction. In the 1980s, the extraction of covering sand from this area began and continues to this day. A lake has now formed that serves as a breeding area for many bird species, including the Kingfisher. This permanent nature area is complete with a constructed shallow water area, a special nesting wall for sand martins, and an observation hut. Nearby, there is a large lookout tower with a view stretching deep into Twente and Germany. In the middle of the last century, various prehistoric artifacts were found during excavations, such as arrowheads and remains of mammoths. The Oelemars is an important bird area. Since the municipality of Losser has little open water, the Oelemars already grew into an area with many water bodies during its reclamation. This turned out to be attractive for birds.
