Brug Breukelen Brooklyn Bridge

The drawbridge of Breukelen is a historic eye-catcher over the Vecht. Traditionally, Americans who visited Breukelen called the bridge 'the Dutch Brooklyn bridge'. Of course, the swing bridge looks nothing like the nearly two-mile-long Brooklyn Bridge over the East River in Brooklyn, New York, so the similarity in the English-pronounced name is nothing more than a nicety. As early as the 16th century, there was a bridge over the Vecht here, probably a wooden folding bridge. The current bridge will be replaced by a new one in historic style in mid-2022. The bridge is the 'pivot point' in the two loops of the Breukelen-Brooklyn 375 cycling tour.
