The Mokkebank is a nature reserve of 66 hectares in the IJsselmeer near Gaasterland. This sandbank, covered with reeds, shrubs, and small trees, is separated from Gaasterland by a vegetated channel. Surrounding the Mokkebank is a waterfowl reserve of 1,456 hectares.
The bank was formed just like the areas on the west coast due to the closure of the Zuiderzee. As a result, a sandbank became exposed east of Laaksum. The bank attracted many seagulls. When the channel between the mainland became silted up, the islets and banks became connected to the mainland.
