The Five Squares
The five squares (Wilhelminaplein, Betaplein, Schelmenhofje, Morenhoek, and Luciushof) are located in the center of Heerlen. Together, they form the vibrant heart of Heerlen, making them inspiring cultural spots. Here you can see various murals and the so-called social sofas.
Wilhelminaplein
Wilhelminaplein is the largest square, and hundreds of years ago, there was a livestock market here. Nowadays, there is plenty of space on Wilhelminaplein to organize events and various other activities.
Betaplein
Betaplein owes its name to the Betahuis. Working, meeting, and inspiring are central here. Various creative companies are based here. The Betahuis is accessible to everyone.
Schelmenhofje
This courtyard is named after the Schelmentoren. The Schelmenhofje was only discovered after the residential building that stood in that spot was demolished. The Schelmenhofje is the youngest square and is a popular place to spend an afternoon.
Morenhoek
The Morenhoek probably owes its name to the fact that there was a cemetery here. In 1600, during the Spanish occupation, the deceased Moors who served the Spanish soldiers were buried here.
The famous disco 'De Morenhoek' and dance school 'Swing Inn' were located here from the 60s until the early 80s. In the middle of the square stands a Social Sofa, and there is a stunning mural to admire.
Luciushof
Luciushof cannot be accessed via public roads, but you really have to experience this special place. The Luciushof exudes a serene peace; it is quiet, yet you are in the heart of Heerlen.
Various social organizations are based here, and you are warmly welcome to take a look. Don't forget to visit the beautiful former monastery garden De Luciushof.
