You are now looking at the choir of the Reformed Church, considered by experts to be one of the most beautiful village churches in the Province of Utrecht. Construction of this church began around 1350, and it was altered and expanded in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tower portal is the oldest part, built in Romanesque style. The rest of the church is constructed in the lighter late Gothic style. The church was dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, which was celebrated for centuries with an annual pilgrimage. Kockengen even became a pilgrimage site!
After the Reformation, at the end of the 16th century, the church was taken over by Protestants. The Catholics worshiped in clandestine churches until 1852, when a new Catholic church was inaugurated on the Voorstraat.
The historical photo on the board shows that the church square was also used as a cattle market. To the right of the church, in the 19th century, there was a cigar factory, which provided good employment in the village.
To the left of the church lies the former town hall. The municipal coat of arms still hangs above the front door. Before the town hall moved here in 1938, the public primary school was located in this building.
