This beautiful museum tells the story of 200 years of discipline and the Netherlands. The prison village was created thanks to the efforts of Johannes van den Bosch. His goal was to fight poverty by giving people a new chance in the Colonies of Benevolence. Of course, you had to behave and do your best. To remind you of this, there was discipline and punishment. What that meant and how it developed over the years can be seen here in this former prison.
Veenhuizen, as part of the Colonies of Benevolence, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the courtyard of the museum, the performance The Pauper's Paradise has been shown.
