The Molenbeek

After the Molenbeek disappeared underground through a sewer pipe with the construction of the shopping area, the hidden history of this brook has become a surprise for many.
At the Stenen Sluis in the city park of Sittard, you can still see where the Molenbeek splits off from the Geleenbeek and begins its own course.
The name says it all: since the brook was last dug in the twelfth century, it has been turning the massive wheels of various mills, starting with the corn mill on Molenbeekstraat, built around 1344.
LocationFrom the parking lot at Tempelplein in Sittard, enter the narrow alley of Gruizenstraat. Follow it until you reach the white building Den Tegel after about 50 meters. You are now behind the shopping street. Walk and look towards the main shopping street. Here you will find the Archeo location/tile made of corten steel.
