Roman Voerendaal

With the Archeo Route Limburg you will discover the stories behind Limburg's history and archaeology. The most important places of this route are marked with a work of art in the shape of a spear.
If you walk through Voerendaal and Klimmen, you walk in ancient footsteps, dating back to the Romans. You follow the famous Via Belgica, an important thoroughfare in Roman times.
The road through Voerendaal was a small part of the four-hundred-kilometre-long road, all the way from the French sea coast to the German Rhineland. Archaeologists found part of the road at the Bergseweg and the Oude Midweg.
Not only the Via Belgica, but also remains of burial grounds and villa rusticas prove the presence of the Romans in this region in the first five centuries AD.
Villa Ten Hove, the largest and best-known Roman agricultural complex in the Netherlands, supplied the growing population with grain. Along the Roman roads there was a belt of lookouts. The church of Klimmen may have been built on the foundations of such a lookout.
