Westergasterrein

The Westergasterrein has been part of the 19th century Westerpark since 2003. The cultural park exemplifies the current concept of relaxation, with 'wild' nature between industrial remnants and plenty of space for events and activities. The design is by the American landscape architect Kathryn Gustafson. This part is now called Cultuurpark Westergas.
At the end of the 19th century, the Imperial Continental Gas Association commissioned the Westergasfabriek. Apparently, the supply of energy was already an international matter at that time. At this plant, gas was extracted from coal. That process fell into disuse when Dutch gas was discovered in Slochteren. The buildings of the former gasworks were designed by Isaac Gosschalk in a neo-Renaissance style, with many frills and the typical Dutch white bacon layers between the red brick.
