Nieuwendammerdijk

The Nieuwendammerdijk was constructed in the 16th century. The dike protected fishermen and shipbuilders from the water of the IJ, which was directly connected to the Zuiderzee. In the 19th century, the Nieuwendammer Ham, the entire piece south of the dike, was filled in, and only a Pereboomsloot remains here. Nieuwendam was annexed by Amsterdam in 1921, when the village could not recover from the damage of a flood.

Significant wooden houses for pilots and shipowners appeared along the dike in the 18th century. In one of those buildings is the cozy café ’t Sluisje, next to the lock between the Kleine Die and the Zijkanaal K. In the 19th century, the neo-Gothic, Roman Catholic Augustinuskerk was added there. Nieuwendam is also the birthplace of Aart Staartjes (1938), the great, grumpy friend of children. I can imagine that he wandered around here in his youth, causing mischief.

Meanwhile, the Nieuwendammerdijk is inhabited by affluent city dwellers who enjoy lounging extensively in front of their houses. Warehouse Insulinde has been converted into luxury apartments.
