The painter Piet Mondriaan lived at Zonnebrink 4 in Winterswijk from 1880 to 1892. His father was the headmaster of the evangelical primary school and lived with his family in the director's house right next to the school. Here, Piet learned to draw and paint under the guidance of his father, Pieter Cornelis Mondriaan, and especially his uncle, Frits Mondriaan.
The former residence of the Mondriaan family is now part of the museum. This is thanks to Jan Nijhuis and his wife Elizabeth, who acquired the villa at Zonnebrink 4 in 1984, shortly before it was to be demolished by a resolution of the city council. They renovated it and used the premises as a residence and for their art gallery "Mondriaanhuis." In 1991, they bought the neighboring house and moved the gallery there. Elizabeth had always envisioned the establishment of a museum.
Through the commitment of several citizens of Winterswijk and, in particular, a supporter who acquired the buildings and made them available to the Villa Mondriaan Foundation, the dream finally became reality. Under the supervision of "project manager" Wim van Krimpen (former director of the municipal museum and the art hall in Rotterdam), the buildings were connected and expanded by a modern new construction, and the museum was able to open in May 2013.
The museum receives financial support from the municipality of Winterswijk as well as the province of Gelderland.
