Nijreesbos is a forest in the Dutch municipality of Almelo. It is located southeast of the city, and covers an area of about 165 hectares. The nijrees neighbourhood is named after the forest. The name Nijrees comes from a farm called Erve Nijrees, which is located east of the forest. Erve Nijerees has known several names in former times, such as Nienreiss, Niereest, Nienrees, Nijerees and Groot Nijerees. In 1675 it became the Nijreest in the so-called fire city register. 'Reest' indicates a stream spillway and 'Nije' stands for 'new'.
