Since 1911, Staatsbosbeheer has been purchasing heathland in this area. Even during the crisis years around 1930, a lot of reclamation work took place here, during which workers were employed as part of public works. Initially, land was plowed with the help of oxen-drawn plows. Afterwards, the area was sown with lupin and serradelle as green fertilization to make the land suitable for forestry. A varied forest developed in which Norway spruce, Sitka spruce, Austrian douglas fir, and especially Japanese larch and native and American oak thrived well, according to an article in the magazine Spitwark of the historical society Carspel Oderen. The Scots pine fared significantly worse.
