Falieberg forest

The Faliebergbos has an area of almost 30 hectares and also concerns the subsoil of the Tonckenshuys. The Tonckenshuys is named after Marius Tonckens, this home is integrated with the former villa of Marius Tonckens. Marius Tonckens (born 5-11-1865; died 16-9-1957) as mayor meant a lot in the development for the then municipality of Zuidwolde During his term of office, major changes occurred in many areas such as public transport, utilities and mining. Mayor Tonckens has actively tried to guide the changes, keeping in mind the interests of the common man.

Marius Tonckens had a lot of real estate at the time of his death. A part is formed by inheritance and separation of the market property and is mainly located at Huis ter Heide in North Drenthe. A second part (near Stuifzand) was mainly acquired by Marius' father. The third part, the Falieberg in Zuidwolde (Dr.), was bought by Marius Tonckens himself.

The Falieberg forest is occasionally used for commercial logging. Furthermore, it is already a recreational walking forest for the Zuidwoldigers. The forest is largely planted. There are photos from the 30's of the last century on which you can see that there was hardly any forest. In the forest there are now plots with Spruce, Pine, Beech and Oak, but here and there more and more a mixed forest is emerging with a remarkably strong undergrowth of Hulst. Special plant species and mushroom species can be found in the forest. Bird species such as the Black Woodpecker breed there and squirrels and sometimes roe deer can often be seen. Such a forest has its own character. There are beautiful paths through it, which are built and maintained by the group "Friends of the Falieberg". In the middle of the forest is a hill that has been called the Falieberg since time immemorial. No one really knows why it's called that. It is a nice place to play and to use in snow when sliding on the sled. On the north side of the Falieberg a small open-air theatre has been built. Every year a number of performances are organized in this theater.
