The groundwater level
The groundwater meter indicates the level of the deeper groundwater. At this location, the groundwater level fluctuates between 1.00 and 3.00 m below the surface. For proper raised bog development, there must be sufficient water present. A higher groundwater level ensures that the low areas do not dry out too quickly. This means that the groundwater level at this location should not drop deeper than 2.00 m below the surface. Therefore, the ditches in the Holtveen have been filled in. Measures in the surrounding area of the Dwingelderveld must ensure that the groundwater level does not drop too much in the summer in the future. For healthy heather vegetation, the groundwater should not sink too deep.
Here at the Holtveen, it is clearly visible that the water level is higher in some places than in others. This is due to an impermeable layer beneath the peat bog that prevents the water from sinking into the soil. The Holtveen is fed by rainwater. The educational groundwater meter indicates the groundwater level in the Holtveenslenk.
Like the Holtveen, all ponds and small bogs in the national park depend on rainwater. This creates a unique habitat for many plants and animals.
To illustrate the importance of groundwater, a groundwater meter has been placed here where you can see how deep the water is and what effects this level has on nature. Even though it may seem wet enough around you, the water can still sink too deep, making the area too dry, especially for the wet heath fields. This also has consequences for the natural values in this area. Where possible, the managers try not to let the water flow unnecessarily away through ditches. In consultation, they also ensure that the groundwater level outside the national park can also rise to a higher level, which is of great importance to our area.
