As in almost all villages in the Netherlands, new residential areas were also built in Nigtevecht after World War II to create living space for the rapidly growing population. While the old village mainly consisted of historical buildings along the Dorpsstraat, the village expanded significantly after the war due to the construction of various new neighborhoods in the meadows. Between 1950 and 1990, the population doubled from 700 to 1400. Now there are 1500.
From the linear development of a row of houses along the Vecht, the layout of the village changed to a more or less oval shape. Centrally located is the Dorpshuis, built in the 1960s, an important hub in the social village life.
The Nieuweweg was - as the name suggests - the first road with new houses and the start of the expansions of the old village. The street was developed in phases between 1953 and 1959 and consisted of so-called housing law homes, intended for social rental.
Some of the houses were built as company homes for employees of the foam rubber factory Rubatex on the Dorpsstraat.
The photo clearly shows that the construction of the first houses had progressed to a point just past where you are now standing.
Route: Turn left and immediately right, into the driveway with the red and white tiles and follow the path around the community garden complex to the parking lot.
