We are now cycling through the nature reserve “Plan Tureluur”. During the construction of the Oosterschelde barrier, a lot of native nature was lost. That’s why the nature restoration project “Plan Tureluur” was set up. Special species such as the godwit, curlew, and plover call this area home. Many coastal birds find their food in the intertidal zone and rest in the inland areas (in the region of Plan Tureluur).
The curlew is the mascot for this project. This protected wading bird can be recognized by its long red legs and its distinctive call “tjululuu”, which translates to “curlew”. Although they are wading birds, you can also often see them on the mudflats where they are searching for small fish or amphipods. You can also regularly see the curlews perched on posts.
Take a moment to look and listen to see if you can spot/hear this bird.
