The Beerse Overlaat is the most famous and infamous floodplain in the Netherlands. The site is a former lowering of the dike of the Meuse near the village of Beers. The floodplain bed was several kilometers wide and stretched from Beers to the north of Den Bosch. The floodplain overflowed when the high water of the river threatened the nearby towns and villages. Especially in winter, the floodplain turned into a second parallel river, which the locals also referred to as the "Beerse" or "Beerse Meuse." In 1942, the floodplain was closed. To allow water to drain smoothly, it was important that there were no obstacles such as buildings or trees. The flat landscape of the Beerse Overlaat is therefore an excellent place for a nice bike ride, walk, or picnic. Read more about the Beerse Overlaat. The best place to park is at the monument at the entrance of the Beerse Overlaat (Kerkeveld 2).
