The men's monastery "Jerusalem" at Gerkesklooster was originally founded as a Premonstratensian monastery. It was established around 1240 and in 1249 it became part of the Order of Cistercians, as a subsidiary monastery of the Klaarkamp monastery near Rinsumageest. Within the monastery, there were two groups of monks who were mostly separated from each other: the gray (squirrel) monks and the white monks. The gray monks were primarily responsible for agriculture and the reclamation of areas, while the white monks focused mainly on study and prayer.
In 1580, the monastery was abolished by order of the Frisian States, and in 1594 all buildings, except for the brewery, were demolished.
In 1629, the local residents of the monastery were granted permission to convert the brew house into a church building. The peculiar thing about this building was that initially the preacher and later also the sexton used the eastern part as a residence.
The former brew house is still used as the church building of the Reformed congregation in Gerkesklooster. Since March 2017, part of the upper floor and the attic has been used by the Foundation Historical Circle Gerkesklooster Stroobos.
