The Milkmaid

On the Town Hall square in Huizen, she has stood since 2012 in her yellow dress with two buckets from which milk is pouring. The Huizen Milkmaid. The girl embodies an intriguing story. The mysterious young woman who daily entered the old village of Huizen with buckets full of creamy milk. Without regard for the person, she distributed the milk to poor farming families and the widows of drowned fishermen. The ceramic statue by artist Berry Holslag is the starting point of the walking tour through Huizen that is named after her. The walk through the old fishing village that once lay on the Zuiderzee takes you through historic streets with monumental farms. We make the official route a bit longer by also walking to the old harbor. Unlike nearby fishing villages like Spakenburg, it is not located in the village but a kilometer outside of it. Huizen only got a harbor late. Before that, the fishing boats with fish lay anchored off the coast. The smell of freshly baked fish wafts over the square. It is busy at the stall De Rode Mul.
