Roermond is a municipality in the middle of the Dutch province of Limburg. It has a population of 59,142 and an area of 74.19 km². The municipality has two dialects: Roermonds and Swalms. Roermond played an important role in the municipal reorganization in Middle Limburg in 2007. Initially, the municipality was to be expanded with Swalmen. Roermond feared that expanding with only Swalmen would not provide sufficient administrative strength. Swalmen aimed for a merger with Beesel. The discussion of the bill in the House of Representatives and the Senate led to the implementation of the original proposal made by the province, resulting in the creation of a central municipality of about 54,000 inhabitants as of January 1, 2007.
