Jordaan

Description

During Rembrandt's lifetime, in the early 17th century, Amsterdam's population quadrupled. It grew from a small town of 60,000 to a city of more than 200,000 people in 50 years. This created an enormous demand for housing. Therefore, the famous 17th-century canal belt was constructed to drain building areas. The less affluent immigrants were housed in the northwestern part that later became known as the Jordaan, and in the east, the "Nieuwmarkt neighborhood."
